Careers in AI · Forward Deployed Engineer
Forward Deployed Engineer: the role, and how to start.
A forward deployed engineer (FDE) sits with a customer, understands their problem and builds the software that solves it, end to end. With AI, more companies need people who can do exactly that. Here is what the role asks for, and where to build the base.
A week as an FDE, roughly
- ListenSit with the customer. What is slow, broken or manual?
- DesignSketch the system: data, screens, the AI part, the risks.
- BuildWrite and ship the solution on their infrastructure.
- Hand overDocument it, so their team can run it.
- Feed backTell the product team what customers really need.
In short: A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer who works directly with customers and builds complete solutions for them, today often with AI. The role needs full-system thinking, fast delivery, data, AI agents, security and cost sense. Skillkraft’s 8-week live course builds that base: you ship 8 real products end to end, without needing to code at the start.
The skills
What a forward deployed engineer needs, and where you learn it
| Skill | Why the role needs it | In the Skillkraft course |
|---|---|---|
| Understand the whole system | An FDE owns the solution end to end, so they need to see how frontend, backend, database and APIs fit together. | Weeks 2–3: how software is built, system design, DNS |
| Ship fast, on real infrastructure | The job is to get something working in the customer's world, not a demo on a laptop. | Week 4: the cloud and your first live website |
| Build with data | Most customer problems are about their data: forms, records, dashboards, back offices. | Week 6: web app with a database, a CRM with login |
| Put AI to work | Today's FDE roles centre on AI: chatbots on a customer's own content, agents that do tasks, automations. | Week 7: AI chatbot, agents and MCP, automation |
| Keep it safe and affordable | A customer remembers a surprise cloud bill or a breach longer than any feature. | Week 8: cloud cost and security |
| Work like a team | Version control, reviews and clear hand-overs, because the customer's engineers take over after you. | Week 3: Git and how teams work |
Honest note: 8 weeks gives you the base and a portfolio of working products. FDE roles usually ask for engineering experience on top.
Questions
Forward deployed engineer: common questions
What is a forward deployed engineer?
A software engineer who works directly with a customer, inside their problem, and builds the solution with them: from understanding the need to shipping working software and adapting the product to their setup. The title was made known by Palantir and is now used by many AI companies.
How is an FDE different from a software engineer or a solutions engineer?
A software engineer usually builds one product for many customers. A solutions or sales engineer shows and configures it. A forward deployed engineer sits with one customer and writes the code that makes it work for them, often across the whole stack.
Is the role growing?
Interest is rising fast. In Germany, Google searches for “forward deployed engineer” were up about 510 % year on year (Google Keyword Planner, September 2025 to August 2026), and job postings with the title grew strongly in 2025 (Bloomberry analysis, January to October 2025 vs. 2024).
Will the Skillkraft course make me a forward deployed engineer?
No course can promise that, and 8 weeks is a start, not a career. What the course gives you is the base the role is built on: you build full products end to end, with AI, on real infrastructure, and you can show them.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not to start. You describe what you want and the AI writes the code, while you learn how software is built so you can judge and fix what it gives you. Most FDE roles later expect solid engineering experience on top of that.
